Welcome to Jim's Garage,
dedicated to jazz, and all good music
Precisely what? Well, there ain't no precisely, but Jim & I grew up listening to a huge variety of sounds and vibes. It was usually guitar-centric... John McLaughlin was a major figure, as was Jaco, Weather Report, John Scofield, Mike Stern, Larry Coryell, Paco de Lucia, and the list goes on... Music like this does something to you. It excites, and it inspires. This site is dedicated to sharing a little of that love with whoever is interested. Jazz remains a minority music, and many of the greats who have created, and continue to create, this music remain unnoticed by vast numbers of people. And yet, what beauty, and what joy, these musicians have created! They inspired us to be musicians, too. (Well, so did Bert Weedon.) Have a look around and see what's going on in the world of amazing and incredible improvisational music. It's a gas! Martin C. (with thanks to big bro Jim for his music inspiration!)
STOP THE PRESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now Published!
KIND OF GREEN -Jazz Legends, from '86 - '90, through an Irish lens is a photo book chronicling the jazz adventures of Jim and Martin. It contains over 150 photos of the greatest jazz musicians in the period 1986 to 1990! Yes, Miles, John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, Wayne Shorter, George Benson.... you name it. We got 'em!
The book can be purchased on Blurb (and elsewhere). As it is published through SNOWCHILD PRESS, click here to get all the details on HOW TO GET: CLICK!
This book is a gem. And, for those who like a bit of that kind of thing, it carries endorsements by numerous jazz critics! It also reveals an aspect of Irish jazz that few people know about. Ever heard of the magazine JazzNews International? No? That's because Ireland's first and only ever jazz magazine has been buried under the sands of time! Along with its illustrious founder Dara O'Lochlainn. It was thanks to him that myself and Jim were able to cover so many jazz gigs and festivals all those years ago... This book is a tribute to both Jim and Dara, both of whom are probably now enjoying some cool gig at the jazz club in the sky. Yes, alas.... my brother Jim, whose name adorns this humble website, passed away last year, in 2022. Yet... he comes alive in the pages of this book! See link at the top of this page to see extra material related to this book.
